With the release scheduled for less than a month, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold will join the lineup that already includes the Pixel 9, 9 Pro and 9 Pro XL, all of which are expected to be officially unveiled by Google on August 13.
Although the Pixel 9, the standard variant, has already been shown in a hands-on video, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold has remained in the shadows for a longer period. This second-generation foldable from Google was shielded from prying eyes until Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) published official photos and key details about its technical specifications on the government's website.
The Pixel 9 series will include the following models:
- Pixel 9 (codename GUR25)
- Pixel 9 Pro (GEC77)
- Pixel 9 Pro XL (GZC4K)
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold (GGH2X)
NCC also provided the first official images of the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. These images confirm that Google is moving away from the previous design, which sparked both praise and controversy, to a new style that is sure to generate further discussion.
The new Pixel 9 series cases look inspired by the contours of iPhone rivals, but with a photo island seemingly created by algorithms rather than a human designer, hinting at a transition to a future design that Google could use. Pictures taken in a sterile setting do not help convey a compelling marketing message.
The Pixel 9 Pro Fold adopts a design similar to the OnePlus Open, with a taller outer screen. The camera bar has been replaced with a bulky trim, meant to prevent the phone from swaying on flat surfaces. The inner screen is taller and narrower, with less visible bezels, and can be fully opened. The inner camera is now cut out in the upper left corner, replacing the old camera built into the frame.
To accommodate the new design, the battery capacity has been reduced to 4,560 mAh, compared to 4,727 mAh in the previous model, it remains to be seen if the efficiency of the new Tensor processor will compensate for this change.
Battery capacities for the Pixel 9 series are as follows:
- Pixel 9: 4,558 mAh
- Pixel 9 Pro: 4,558 mAh
- Pixel 9 Pro XL: 4,942 mAh
- Pixel 9 Pro Fold: 4,560 mAh (1,183 mAh + 3,377 mAh)
Charging speeds via USB-C do not exceed 35W, which means that charging times will be quite high, regardless of the model chosen.
