Huawei is expanding its ambitions not only in the field of hardware but also in the software sphere, according to what was revealed at the HDC 2024 conference, held from July 21 to 23 at Songshan Lake, Dongguan. In this context, the company presented the beta version of HarmonyOS NEXT.
HarmonyOS NEXT stands out in that it is not based on Android or a Linux derivative, but is built on OpenHarmony, a microkernel specially developed for this operating system. The system provides exclusive support for native applications developed with Ark Compiler and integrated with HMS Core (Huawei Mobile Services). It is not compatible with Android files and apps in apk format, which is also confirmed by various posts on Weibo that demonstrate the lack of compatibility.
The new interface of HarmonyOS NEXT impresses at first sight with the fluidity and speed of animations, demonstrating an improved visual performance.
HarmonyOS NEXT will be implemented not only on smartphones, but also on other devices. Huawei claims the new system brings a 30% performance boost and a 20% reduction in power consumption, though it's not clear what these improvements were attributed to.
This version opens the way to a unified architecture, which combines local capabilities with those in the cloud. Users will be able to share content and apps between various devices more easily, eliminating traditional installation steps.
Among its native features, HarmonyOS NEXT includes AI-assisted image generation, a feature designed to facilitate accessibility for the visually impaired.
The system is based on Ark Multimedia Engine and Ark Graphics Engine, promising to bring ray tracing games to a level comparable to that on PCs.
Huawei continues its software development on its own devices
Faced with the sanctions imposed by the US State Department, Huawei chose to strengthen its position, developing its own solutions both on the hardware and software side. The company is gradually closing its gap with the competition, year after year. HarmonyOS NEXT is currently only available in China, with no confirmed plans for a European release. In Europe, Huawei devices such as the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra released in April 2024 use EmotionUI, not HarmonyOS.
