The laptop display industry could see a revolution with the debut of a new technology.
Lenovo, a technology leader, is preparing to unveil the first laptop equipped with a vertically-rollable display at CES 2025 in Las Vegas, according to well-known analyst Evan Blass.
A step forward from prototype to final product
More than two years after Lenovo unveiled a prototype of a rollable laptop screen, the company appears poised to turn the concept into reality, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of technology.
It all came to a head in October 2022, when Luca Rossi, president of Lenovo's Intelligent Devices Group division, talked about the potential of a revolutionary technology in a video posted on YouTube.
At the time, the idea seemed more like a bold project than an imminent realization.
How does the rollable screen work?
The sixth-generation ThinkBook Plus introduces a spectacular feature: a screen that can be extended vertically.
The technology uses a motorized mechanism that lifts the display, transforming it into a nearly square 15.3-inch panel with an impressive 8:9 aspect ratio.
Although the expansion takes about 10 seconds, the result delivers an innovative and immersive user experience.
Tangible benefits for users
This technology is not only a demonstration of technological progress, but also brings significant practical benefits for users.
Reading documents and surfing the web become considerably more convenient thanks to reduced scrolling.
The extended screen space also allows two large applications to run simultaneously, eliminating the need for an external monitor in many cases.
For gaming fans, the portrait format is an excellent choice for arcade titles.
Challenges and possible limitations
However, this innovation also raises some important questions.
Durability is a key factor, especially because of the increased number of moving parts compared to a conventional laptop. In addition, the use of a plastic screen, more fragile than glass, makes it susceptible to scratches.
A technology milestone
While Lenovo hasn't officially confirmed these details, the CES 2025 unveiling could mark a world first: the first commercial laptop with a rollable display.
The price will no doubt reflect the revolutionary nature of the product, likely to be comparable to laptops with foldable screens.
It remains to be seen whether this innovation will win over the public and whether the benefits on offer will justify the substantial investment.
